A Night in the Clink is set in the Clink restaurant at HMP Cardiff. Three men, who are coming to the end of their prison sentence, cook and serve the audience their supper whilst sharing their stories and the dreams they have for their lives upon release. In Rhydymwyn Valley  lies a secret: it was once the centre of the race to build the atomic bomb. In 1940 two physicists, Otto Frisch and Rudolph Peierls (working at the University of Birmingham), calculated it was possible to build an atomic bomb but needed a suitable site in which to test out their theories; the British Government chose Rhydymwyn Valley Works to be that place. The Container, by Clare Bayley, tells the story of five characters stowed away in the back of a lorry journeying to what they hope will be a better life. The production was produced by the Welsh Refugee Council & shermantheatre.co.uk and performed inside a shipping container. The setting works tremendously well. Tom Raybould’s sound design creates a sense of a truck moving, jolting, shuddering to an ominous stop. Bridget Keehan’s direction makes the most of the space, amplifying points at which violence erupts or emotions can no longer be contained.
